Unpacking the Baggage is back – this time in collaboration with our friends at Teatro Milagro, presenting ¡HUELGA! by Maya Malan-Gonzalez, directed by B&B Resident Artist Mandana Khoshnevisan, with sound design by B&B Resident Artist Lawrence Siulagi. ¡HUELGA! is a full-staged virtual production of a play exploring the incredible life of Dolores Huerta, co-founder of United Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez. Travel with Dolores from the beginning of the farmworker’s movement in 1962 up to the present day, as she continues to make history at the age of 90! Dolores’ innumerable successes often went uncelebrated in the past, but in 2012, when she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama, he acknowledged the fact that Dolores coined the famous phrase “Si, se puede, yes, we can!”
The ensemble cast of ¡HUELGA! – which includes Aurora Hernandez as Dolores, Ajai Terrazas Tripathi as Bobby Kennedy and Fred Ross, Pedro Adan Dominguez as Cesar Chavez and Tricia Castañeda Guevara as The Eagle and Gloria Steinem – also plays dozens of other characters in this fast-paced, sometimes-irreverent retelling of the history of UFW and its co-founders Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez. Susana Jacobo joins the cast as La Musica, to provide traditional folk songs for the marches and movements.
Following the performance, join us for a talk-back discussion with members of the cast and crew, including B&B Resident Artists Mandana Khoshnevisan and Lawrence Siulagi!
