Unpacking the Baggage: ‘Growing Up Great’ Live Virtual Performance + Discussion

10/23/20

Summary

Growing Up Great is a solo play written and performed by Portland-based actor Jenny Newbry, taking us back in time to her Walnut Hills Elementary School third grade musical about choosing your life’s career. Poignant and lighthearted, mildly irreverent and deeply earnest, Growing Up Great is an honest look at the ways in which childhood and education influences our worldview as we grow up. Spurred by the upheaval of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement, Jenny shares her process of awakening as she begins to question the values and beliefs she was always taught to hold, and invites us to do the same.

This is a live virtual performance of Growing Up Great, followed by a discussion and Q&A with Jenny Newbry. B&B audiences may recognize Jenny from our 2017 production of Brontë, as well as Cinnamon and Cigarettes, her other solo show that was featured in last winter’s SOLO Fest. RSVP for the link to join us on Zoom for the show and conversation!
