The Tempest / La Tempestad

by William Shakespeare
bi-lingual adaptation by Yasmin Ruvalcaba & TS McCormick
Directed by Yasmin Ruvalcaba
August 11th - 28th

A fantasy full of life, magic, laughter, and love is the perfect reemergence for Shakespeare in the Park. The Tempest, The Bard’s final play, is an adventure unlike any other, and Bag&Baggage Productions is pleased to be bringing you a beautiful bilingual adaptation by TS McCormick and director Yasmin Ruvalcaba.

Twelve years ago, Prospero was Duke of Milan. Being of a bookish disposition, he withdrew more and more into his studies. Eventually, his power hungry brother Antonio usurped his dukedom, putting Prospero and his baby daughter Miranda out to sea in a rotten boat. They eventually landed on a distant island once ruled by the evil witch Sycorax. Prospero, a powerful sorcerer, defeated the witch, and now rules his island with the help of Ariel, a spirit, and Caliban, the foul son of the witch Sycorax. When magic reveals that a ship bearing his old enemies is sailing near the island, Prospero summons a storm to wreck their ship. The survivors, separated by the storm, land on Pospero’s island. This is where the action of The Tempest begins.

Will Prospero regain his dukedom? Will Miranda find true love? Will they survive the cunning Antonio?  Find out this summer!

The Last White Man

by Bill Cain

Directed by Scott Palmer
October 13th - 30th 2022

Playing Hamlet is no easy task. In a troubled production, three successive actors fight their way through Shakespeare’s longest and most challenging role. Movie star Charlie, his understudy Rafe and the transcendent Tigg battle doubts, ghosts, critics, and each other while trying to prove that each of theirs is the performance to remember. There’s even a disco number to add to the craziness!

Bill Cain has penned a thrilling, fast-moving love poem to writers and actors, and everything that makes theatre the greatest show on Earth. This show marks the return of Bag&Baggage Productions Founding Artistic DIrector, Scott Palmer, to the very stage he built. He will guest direct this play, and Apples in Winter, later in the season

Danny and the Deep Blue Sea

by John Patrick Shanley

Directed by TS McCormick
December 1st-18th 2022

Danny and the Deep Blue Sea is set in a rundown bar in the Bronx, where two of society’s rejects, Danny and Roberta, strike up a halting conversation over their beer. He is a brooding, self-loathing young man who resorts more to violence than reason; she is a divorced, guilt-ridden young woman whose troubled teenage son is now being cared for by her parents. Danny, whose fellow truck drivers call him “the animal,” seems incapable of tender emotion, while Roberta, who is still haunted by the memory of an ugly sexual incident involving her father, is distrustful of men in general. And yet, as their initial reserve begins to melt, and they decide to spend the night together, the possibility of a genuine and meaningful relationship begins to emerge—the first for both of them.

Danny and the Deep Blue Sea is directed by Bag&Bagagge's own Managing Director, TS McCormick.

I F#@!ING Hate Shakespeare

by Gina Femia

Directed by Ephriam Harnsberger
March 2nd - 26th 2022

I Fucking Hate Shakespeare, is described as, “Raw, vulnerable, exposed and open in a beautiful, moving play that is funny at times and heartbreaking too.” Don’t worry… we are not going to abandon the bard’s work, but we promise this play is going to be amazing.

Gina Femia is a playwright. William Shakespeare is a playwright, too - maybe you've heard of him? Through the lens of different Shakespeare plays, and juxtaposing him with the abusive relationships that defined her coming of age, Gina discusses how her experience with the Bard has shaped her origin story as a playwright.

Apples in Winter

by Jennifer Fawcett

Directed by Scott Palmer
March 4th-25th 2022

Twenty-two years ago, Miriam’s son, Robert, committed a horrible crime while in the grips of withdrawal. It was violent and terrifying and resulted in the deaths of two teenagers who did not deserve to die in such a violent and terrifying way. Robert was caught, tried, and convicted of first-degree murder and has been sitting on death row ever since. In seven hours the state will execute him. As is the tradition, Robert is granted a last meal. His request: a slice of his mother’s apple pie.

This is a play about monsters and the mothers of monsters. And about how we care for each other. And about how to make a really good apple pie.
