MMIR FAQs

What is the MMIR National Festival?

May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (#MMIR #MMIW). Join in solidarity with Indigenous people by being part of a festival of play readings on May 5, 2026.

How do I find plays about Missing and Murdered Indigenous People?

Here is a curated list of 15 plays on New Play Exchange, each of which addresses MMIR from a different perspective.

How can my theater company join the festival?

Here are ways you can join the festival:

  1. Choose a play that tackles MMIR, and publicly present it at your venue on May 5, 2026
  2. Partner with another organization in your community to pool resources to publicly present a reading (maybe you have a venue but no time to produce a reading; or maybe you’d like to participate, but you don’t have a space available)
  3. Make your own plan!
What are the requirements to join the festival?
  • a public presentation
  • Any Native artists brought on board are paid equitably with other programs at your organization
What does Native Theater Project provide?
  • A curated list of plays about MMIR
  • Press releases, which we will send nationally, and you can share with your own press lists
  • A central website listing all theaters and readings participating in the festival
  • A pre-recorded panel with MMIR activists, which you can share with audiences, if you wish

Why should my company participate?

This is an opportunity to move beyond land acknowledgments, create or build relationships, and connect with your fellow theatre companies.

What if I have more questions?

If you want to be part of this but aren’t sure how, please don’t hesitate to contact Jeanette Harrison, NTP Creative Director. ntp@bagnbaggage.org
