Antíkoni by Beth Piatote

Beth Piatote’s Antíkoni is a bold and urgent reimagining of Sophocles’ Antigone, framed through a Native American perspective and set within a museum filled with Indigenous belongings. In a near-future world where Nationalists have seized power, a Nez Perce family is caught between the demands of modern survival and the sacred traditions they are determined to uphold. At the heart of the conflict is Kreon, a Native museum curator who complies with the new regime to protect his position, and Antikoni, who refuses to let go of her people’s truth—risking everything to honor what is sacred. This co-production with Native Theater Project is an investigation of resistance, ethical duty, and the enduring struggle to protect history, identity, and sovereignty.

ABOUT

Native Theater Project (NTP) develops and collaboratively produces plays by Native playwrights, and hires Native artists to tell those stories. NTP partners with tribal nations, community organizations, and other theaters to offer career development, leadership, and performing arts education programs.

About Bag&Baggage and NTP:

To achieve Bag&Baggage’s mission to expand the cannon, we will work in meaningful relationships with Native artists and Native communities. Native Theater Project is our ambitious partnership to begin doing just that! As a starting point, Bag&Baggage is committed to producing two plays by Native writers, and hiring Native artists in leadership positions, beginning with the world premiere of Diné Nishłį (i am a sacred being) Or, A Boarding School Play, continuing with Antíkoni.
