SUMMARY:350.org Washington County presents Deep Green
DESCRIPTION:One World Films and Conversations Presents Deep Green \nJoin 350.org Washington County for another thought-provoking film and conversation. We hope for a great turnout and conversation just like our past film events. Bring your friends and family and let’s explore issues and talk! \nFree film and free popcorn\, and filmaker Matthew Briggs will join us to share updates and ideas! \nWe explored extreme energy extraction in our last film\, To the Ends of the Earth. Our next film was produced right here in Oregon\, and offers inspiration with an exploration of positive solutions to the climate crisis. \n  \nAbout Deep Green: \nBased on six years of intensive research and devoted exclusively to solutions to man-made global warming\, “Deep Green” cuts through the clutter to bring new clarity to an increasingly-urgent situation. \nJoin Matt Briggs as he explores the best applications worldwide in energy efficiency\, green building\, de-carbonizing transportation\, sustainable agriculture\, renewable energy and smart grids\, and forest restoration. Some solutions arr profoundly personal and practical—like what one person can do to lower their carbon load in their own house\, with their own lifestyle\, and on their own land. Other solutions are necessarily complex\, such as Southern California Edison’s quest to find the best batteries to electrify transportation. \nWe hear compelling insights from dozens of prominent thinkers\, entrepreneurs\, scientists\, engineers and government officials on de-carbonizing energy and restoring the natural environment. Included are legendary authors Lester Brown and Michael Pollan; renowned scientists Amory Lovins of the Rocky Mountain Institute and Dr. David Suzuki; powerful voices in China like Barbara Finamore\, Huang Ming\, and Zhang Wei; and green energy pioneers in seven countries across Europe. \n  \nAbout Filmmaker Matthew Briggs: \nMatt Briggs makes his directorial debut with “Deep Green\,” the feature-length documentary about solutions to global warming which he also produced and wrote. Filmed in nine countries during the last three years\, “Deep Green” is based on six years of environmental research in which Briggs read literally hundreds of books and thousands of articles\, as well as attending scores of conferences. He previously helped pioneer the wild mushroom industry in the U.S.\, beginning in 1981\, by co-founding what quickly became the largest commercial operation in North America to collect and deliver fresh fungi to restaurants\, specialty stores and such other clients as the White House. The son of a college professor who later became Dean of Students for Portland State University\, Briggs obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon\, where he majored in both the arts and premed. He spent another six years studying at the New England College of Chinese Medicine and San Francisco College of Oriental Medicine before obtaining his license to practice in Oregon and California. In between\, Briggs embarked on two separate global treks that ultimately took him to 50 different countries\, giving him a unique perspective on the world’s diverse cultures.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Art Walk: Sam Fleig
DESCRIPTION:Come to the Downtown Hillsboro Art Walk every first Tuesday of the month. Downtown businesses come together to celebrate the arts and culture in our community. Of course – art is on display. Best of all\, the event is free! \n  \nThis month’s artist: Sam Fleig \n  \nArtist Bio: \nSam was raised in a manual labor environment\, where your craftsmanship was your lively hood. Having worked with wood and steel from an early age\, he has had time to study industrial techniques for quite a while.  Having gotten involved in theatre in his late teens and early twenties\, Sam was able to start sculpting entire rooms out of seemingly nowhere.  He continued his theatrical studies at Portland Community College Rock Creek’s theatre program\, and would then continue his education at the University of Oregon’s theatre program.  Throughout this process\, he would practice and sharpen not only his woodworking and steel working skills\, but he would acquire a taste for small scale sculpture\, sewing\, and in certain cases\, makeup.  Being a young and hungry artist who brings a sculptural element to all of his work\, he decided to continue his education at Portland State University in the College of Art and Design. He has shown at more local Portland shows such as Gallery 101’s Super Salon\, and Super Salon 2.  He finds his inspiration through the issues and stories that have been prevalent in his life such as: industry\, depression\, life struggles\, child drug abuse\, relaxation\, and overconsumption of the digital world. \nEvery day we are surrounded by many different forms and figures from a wide variety of materials. Particularly\, with wood and metal\, many of our buildings\, parks\, and other forms\, would not exist as they do with these two key elements used for building and creating. Many of my designs are taken from both the natural and the man-made. Taking into account these elements\, I turn pieces into a mixture from both ends of this seemingly polar opposite scale. Even though I am comfortable with wood and metal\, this does not stop me from branching out into other materials such as; mass-produced plastics\, epoxy resin\, glues\, paints\, cement\, brick\, and much more. \nWhen recreating a work\, or devising my own\, I seek out the most priceless objects and steal their identity\, so as to change it to my own perspective.  Whether a discarded leftover food container or a Faberge egg\, I seek to alter the perceived value in its socioeconomic standing and bring it into the light of a more modern scope.

SUMMARY:Much Ado About Nothing
DESCRIPTION:Although best-known for the “merry war” of wits between central lovers Benedick and Beatrice\, Much Ado About Nothing offers a grand celebration of love and relationships in their many and varied forms\, resulting in one of the most well-loved of all Shakespearean romantic comedies. Coming to Hillsboro from Glasgow’s Bard in the Botanics\, Gordon Barr’s take on the script turns Benedick and Beatrice into contemporary partners Benedick and Bertram\, inviting us into the alternately witty and barbed banter of their relationship. Bag&Baggage’s production takes Barr’s concept one step further\, exploring love and its many facets with a fluid approach to gender. While everyone plots to make Bertram and Benedick fall for each other\, Don John\, the misanthrope of the story\, contrives a much more malicious plan\, sobering what otherwise might simply be a romp of repartee and romance. Still\, the lovers win out\, Don John is exposed (through some hilarious and haphazard detective work)\, and everyone finds a way to live happily ever after\, reminding us that love is love is love is love.
