SUMMARY:*Canceled* The Measure of Innocence
DESCRIPTION:Due to rising health concerns\, the remaining performances of The Measure of Innocence have been canceled.\n  \n“Some rise by sin\, some by virtue fall.” Drawing on Shakespeare’s inherent genius for seamlessly blending the comic and the tragic\, Portland-based playwright Anya Pearson (Made to Dance in Burning Buildings) adds her own unique command of language\, humor\, and social insight to this story\, reimagining Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure through the all-too-relevant lens of the systemically unjust criminal justice system and the contemporary Black Lives Matter movement. Set in our current fractured political landscape\, The Measure of Innocence is a captivating new dramedy about the dichotomy between corruption and humanity\, morality and mercy\, directed by New York-based theatre artist Wednesday Sue Derrico. This is the second world premiere commission of Bag&Baggage’s nationally-acclaimed Problem Play Project series\, supported by the Meyer Memorial Trust.

SUMMARY:PoC Night: The Measure of Innocence
DESCRIPTION:The Measure of Innocence takes a close look at systemic racism in the United States through the lens of the criminal justice system and prison industrial complex. We realize that PoC‘s or people whose lives have been affected by incarceration may feel isolated in an audience\, as they may be the only representatives of these groups in the theater while these sensitive themes are being played out on stage. With this in mind\, we invite BIPoC audience members and those whose lives have been impacted by incarceration to join us on Saturday\, March 21st at 7:30 pm. Our goal is to create a comfortable and safe environment for watching the show and supporting the work of a PoC playwright and actors; audience advocates will be on hand to provide support in potentially triggering moments. The evening will also feature the opportunity for a post-show discussion\, led by facilitator James Dixon\, to further explore the themes of the show in a safe and supportive environment.\n\nWe are offering $15 tickets for this PoC Night\, using the code Claudio when booking tickets online\, by phone\, or at the door.\n\nClick here for the Facebook Event

SUMMARY:One World Films and Conversations presents Anote’s Ark
DESCRIPTION:One World Films and Conversations Presents Anote’s Ark \nJoin 350.org Washington County for another thought-provoking film and conversation. We hope for a great turnout and conversation just like our past film events. Bring your friends and family and let’s explore issues and talk! \nFree film and free popcorn\, and lots of expertise on climate crisis issues in the room. \nBecause climate change is already changing lives around the world\, this year we will focus on frontline experiences of neighbors far away and near to us. \n  \nAbout Anote’s Ark: \nA look at the devastating effects that climate change has on the people living on Kiribati\, a low-lying atoll in the Pacific. What happens when your nation is swallowed by the sea? With the harsh realities of climate change looming\, the low-lying Pacific nation Kiribati must find a new solution for the survival of its people. With sweeping cinematography\, Anote’s Ark interweaves two poignant stories. Anote Tong\, endearing president of the island\, races to find options – advocating in international climate negotiations and even investigating building underwater cities. At the same time\, warm and sharp-witted Sermery\, a young mother of six\, tackles every struggle with humour. She must decide whether to leave the only culture she knows on the island and migrate to a new life in New Zealand. Anote’s Ark captures the next evolution in the shifting dynamics of climate change-one where borders\, technology\, and global treaties are urgent and can change daily life as we know it. This portrait of the Kiribati people exudes strength of character and grace as they confront the inevitable change they are facing head-on. \nBring a friend\, enjoy free popcorn and free-ranging local community conversation – don’t miss this great event!

SUMMARY:Many Hats Collaboration presents The Undertaking
DESCRIPTION:An aging mother’s health teeters on the brink. Her adult daughter scrambles to find footing as her role shifts from child to authority figure. Death pounds at the door and they both wonder\, could someone this pissed off actually be dying?  \nThrough an interdisciplinary blend of music\, movement and theatrical storytelling\, The Undertaking portrays end-of-life care of an elder using Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2\, played live by local classical ensemble Northwest Piano Trio. Incorporating original text by playwright Emily Gregory along with the classical score\, The Undertaking alternates between movement and original tragicomic scenes to tell the story of the complicated questions which come with caregiving (and receiving).  \nJoAnn Johnson\, Beth Thompson and the musicians of Northwest Piano Trio team up for an unforgettable dance-drama. “Johnson and Thompson do an incredible job of illustrating the complex relationship between parent and child\,” says Broadway World\, calling it “painful and beautiful.”

SUMMARY:SOLO FEST 2020
DESCRIPTION:SOLO Fest showcases stories\, performers\, and artists who are not typically seen on stages in Washington County — people and experiences that have either been ignored\, silenced\, or dismissed. With SOLO Fest\, we celebrate the diversity of the people who live here in our community\, and we honor their stories through the vehicle of solo performance. This year’s festival features the following shows: \n  \nCinnamon and Cigarettes\nWritten and Performed by Jenny Newbry\nDirected by Cassie Greer \nAn exploration of the ways we fall apart and seek to heal\, Cinnamon and Cigarettes is a true story that takes us on an interwoven journey of 4-year-old Jenny and her best friend Jeremy as they grow up and face broken homes\, multiple moves\, violent crime\, depression\, alcohol and drug use\, and addiction cycles. When we realize our parents can’t protect us from the harshness of life\, how do we cope – and what is it that can transform coping into flailing for some people\, or into thriving for others?  How do we heal from pain that feels too deep to endure\, and what do we do when we feel hopeless and alone?  \nThursday\, Jan. 30 @ 7:30 PM – Act I \nSaturday\, Feb. 1 @ 7:30 PM – Act I \n  \nUNIVERSO || The Creation Story\nWritten and Performed by Joaquin Lopez\nConceptualized by Joaquin Lopez and Michael Cavazos\nDirected by Michael Cavazos\nFeaturing the music from the album UNIVERSO \nThis multi-media bilingual presentation shares the formative experiences of a gay man who comes of age navigating cultural identity\, sexual intimacy\, the yearning to be seen\, and the impact of the Pulse Nightclub Massacre. The audience will enter a magical world that pays tribute to Latino queer identity\, emotional survival\, and personal transformation to a disco beat! Directed by queer Latino artist\, Michael Cavazos (Hand2Mouth Theatre)\, the show features the music from Joaquin Lopez’s recent electro-pop album release—UNIVERSO. \nThursday\, Jan. 30 @ 7:30 PM – Act II \nSaturday\, Feb. 1 @ 7:30 PM – Act II \n  \nYou Were Supposed To Be This Great Thing\nWritten and Performed by Warren McPherson \nWhen you grow up Catholic and all your mom wants is for you to be The Pope\, well\, there’s going to be some real disappointment in life. Starting with visions of the papal office\, moving through athletic stardom\, all the way to his current quest to be Super Dad\, McPherson’s one-man storytelling show navigates a life spent constantly questioning the definition of greatness.  \nFriday\, Jan. 31 @ 7:30 PM – Act I \nSaturday\, Feb. 1 @ 2 PM – Act I \n  \nQueen Bess\nWritten and Performed by Victoria Alvarez-Chacon\nAdapted from Robert Irvin’s Before Amelia \nElizabeth Coleman\, AKA Bessie Coleman\, AKA Queen Bess\, was an early civil aviator. She was the first woman of Black and Native American ancestry to hold a pilot license in the United States. Follow Bessie just moments after her last decent; soar with her as she flashes back on her life and the people who influenced her. \nFriday\, Jan. 31 @ 7:30 PM – Act II \nSaturday\, Feb. 1 @ 2 PM – Act II \n  \nAll performances will feature a talk-back discussion with the artists following the conclusion of both shows.
