SUMMARY:Lights Up at The Vault: Fake Radio Presents "It's a Wonderful Life"
DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming Fake Radio back to The Vault Theater for this ongoing holiday tradition! \n“Every holiday season for twenty years (except during COVID!) we’ve recreated the 1947 CBS radio broadcast of Lux Radio Theater’s “It’s a Wonderful Life”… including all of its original commercials. \nThis year\, we’re excited to bring back our favorite tradition with the FABULOUS Mindy Sterling! \nFeaturing top talent from both Portland and Los Angeles\, Fake Radio will re-enact this hit radio show the old-fashioned way: dressed in period clothing and standing with scripts in hand in front of old microphones. Sound and music effects will make you feel like you’re watching a live radio recording from the 1940s. We’ll even re-create the old commercials! Just be ready for the cast to occasionally go off-script! \nSince 1999\, the cast of Fake Radio has produced more than 100 versions of classic radio hits from the 1940s & 1950s with their signature use of both scripted and improvised material.” \n*Tickets are available on a sliding scale in $5 increments – please select the ticket price that best fits your budget. SUMMARY:Unpacking the Baggage: 'It Can’t Happen Here' Stream & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Written in 1935 during the rise of fascism in Europe\, Sinclair Lewis’ darkly satirical novel It Can’t Happen Here follows the ascent of a demagogue who becomes president of the United States by promising to return the country to greatness. In 2016 Berkeley Repertory Theatre unveiled a new stage adaptation of Lewis’ prescient novel; one week after that production ended\, the presidential election roiled our nation. Now\, Berkeley Rep reprises that production with the same director and much of the original cast\, but this time as a radio play in four episodes\, just in time for the 2020 presidential election. The audio drama is being offered free to organizations across the country. The intent for the project is to encourage dialogue and motivate citizens to exercise their civic power and vote.  \nBag&Baggage is honored to join theatres across the nation to help spread the word about this production. Berkeley Rep’s former Artistic Director Tony Taccone along with screenwriter Bennett S. Cohen return with the original director\, two-time Obie Award winner Lisa Peterson. The trio previously collaborated on It Can’t Happen Here when it had its premiere at Berkeley Rep in 2016. \nOscar-nominated actor David Strathairn (Good Night\, and Good Luck) will join many of the previous cast members to bring this political drama to life.  \nA live Q&A session with the creative team will take place following the broadcast. \nFind more info on Berkeley Repertory Theatre’s event page!

DESCRIPTION:They were tireless organizers. Tenacious fighters. And political geniuses. They were Black and Latinx. Indigenous and immigrant. Together\, they won women the right to vote and laid the cornerstone for gender equality in the United States. Yet their stories have rarely been told. Until now. \nAs part of its examination of the 19th Amendment centennial\, The New York Times is publishing a new book\, called Finish the Fight!: The Brave and Revolutionary Women Who Fought for the Right to Vote. Written by Times journalists\, the book explores diverse women who fought for suffrage\, but have been less recognized for their work. \nThe Times also asked playwright Ming Peiffer and director Whitney White to adapt some of the book’s biographies into a new form of theatrical storytelling\, with invented scenes and imagined conversations among five women. The events of their lives\, and their accomplishments\, are real. \nStarring Harriett D. Foy\, Zora Howard\, Q’orianka Kilcher\, Leah Lewis\, and Chelsea Rendon\, you can register to watch Finish The Fight on the NY Times platform at 4:00pm on Tuesday\, August 18th\, at https://timesevents.nytimes.com/finishthefight. \nFollowing the virtual performance on the NY Times platform\, join Bag&Baggage on Zoom at 6:30pm to talk about the women at the heart of this work\, the things we learn from hearing their stories\, and the ways we can continue to honor their legacy in 2020. SUMMARY:‘We Are The Radical Monarchs’ Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Radical Monarchs\, a group of young girls of color on the frontlines of social justice. Set in Oakland\, a city with a deep history of social justice movements\, the film documents the journey of the group as they earn badges for completing units including being an LGBTQ+ ally\, preserving the environment\, and disability justice. Started by two fierce\, queer women of color\, we follow them as they face the challenge to grow the organization\, before and after the 2016 election. \nJoin Bag&Baggage in watching this 82-minute documentary\, and stay around after the conclusion of the film to talk about the important topic of providing opportunities for young women of color and the questions it brings up. \n‘We Are The Radical Monarchs’ is brought to us by Linda Goldstein Knowlton (Director/Producer)\, Katie Flint (Producer/Editor)\, and Grace Lee (Executive Producer). This event is a collaboration with the award-winning documentary series POV (www.pbs.org/pov)\, in a co-presentation of Latino Public Broadcasting. Official Selection\, SXSW.

DESCRIPTION:Without any clear sense of when our state and our region might begin to explore the possibility of “reopening”\, we have made the decision to indefinitely postpone Fallen Angels.\nRead the full statement from Cassie Greer and Beth Lewis here! \n  \n\n  \nBest friends Julia and Jane\, now both happily married to others\, once counted the dashing Maurice as their lover. Guess who’s back in town and requesting the pleasure of the ladies’ company? Anticipating his appearance\, Jane and Julia progressively inebriate themselves\, concerned that secrets from their past will be revealed\, and ultimately causing a host of antics\, in this comedy of manners directed by B&B Resident Artist Andrew Beck. Fallen Angels caused a scandal when it first opened in London in 1925\, with its wanton display of open sexuality and its shocking insinuation that average housewives could desire men other than their husbands. SUMMARY:*CANCELED* Fake Radio presents The Day The Earth Stood Still
DESCRIPTION:Due to recent health concerns regarding COVID-19\, Fake Radio has decided to cancel their performance of The Day The Earth Stood Still.\n  \nAn alien named Klaatu lands his spacecraft on Earth just after the end of World War II. He brings an important message to the planet that he wishes to share with representatives of all nations. However\, because communication is difficult due to Cold War fears\, Klaatu is forced to try an alternative approach: he disguises himself as a common human on Earth. Then\, after finding help from a few unlikely Earthlings\, Klaatu shocks the entire planet into finally listening to his important message about the future of humanity. \nThe original film was so popular\, it was adapted for the radio and broadcast in 1954 as part of the wildly popular Lux Radio Theatre program. 66 years later\, Fake Radio is thrilled to recreate that entire radio broadcast — commercials and all! — for live audiences in both Portland and Hillsboro. \nOur previous guest star Kevin McDonald from “The Kids in the Hall” has had to cancel due to landing a new TV show. Please stay tuned for an updated guest star announcement! \nFor almost 20 years\, Fake Radio has been delighting audiences and critics alike with their unique recreations of classic radio shows from 1938 – 1958. Their shows transport audiences back in time to a live taping of an old-time radio show. The troupe performs in the same fashion popularized during the Golden Age: cast members dress in period clothing\, standing before old microphones\, scripts in hand\, re-creating classic stories while all of the sound effects are perfectly synchronized. The troupe’s well-known hallmark is expertly blending the original broadcast scripts — including the absurd commercials! — with unexpected improvisation. \nFake Radio frequently includes celebrity guest stars in its casts including Emmy Award winners John Larroquette\, Ray Romano\, & Marcia Wallace; comedy legends Fred Willard\, The Kids in the Hall\, & Phil Proctor from The Firesign Theatre; well-established TV actors such as Jeff Garlin\, George Wendt\, Jamie Farr\, Mindy Sterling\, Lynne Stewart\, John Pirruccello\, John Lynch\, Peter Onorati\, Debra Skelton\, & Dean Cain; noted alternative comedians Tom Kenny\, Maria Bamford\, & Rick Overton; and even one of the original cast members from Saturday Night Live: Larraine Newman.
