SUMMARY:Healing the Soil to Save our Civilization
DESCRIPTION:One World Films and Conversations Presents Healing the Soil to Save our Civilization \nJoin 350.org Washington County for another thought-provoking film and conversation. We hope for a great turnout and conversation just like our past several film events. Bring your friends and family and let’s talk! \nFree film and free popcorn! Please register at link below! \nSince Springtime and planting season are just around the corner\, our team thought we’d like to have a lively conversation about the mysteries and carbon-capturing power of the soil all around us. We are lucky to have permission to present a short version of a forthcoming movie “Kiss the Ground” and special guest expert Kristin Ohlson (author of the Soil will Save Us) to help lead our conversation. Don’t miss this great event!

SUMMARY:Third Person: A Staged Reading

SUMMARY:SOLO Fest 2019
DESCRIPTION:SOLO FEST showcases stories\, performers\, and artists who are not typically seen on stages in Washington County — people and experiences that have either been ignored\, silenced\, or dismissed. With SOLO FEST\, we celebrate the diversity of the people who live here in our community\, and we honor their stories through the vehicle of solo performance. This year’s festival features the following shows: \n  \nNone of the Above by Jennifer Lanier \nNone of the Above is a solo comedy about the intersections of race\, gender\, sexuality\, and coming out with Diana Ross. There is no fourth wall and the audience participates while Lanier becomes several characters — including her six-year-old self\, her Daddy the Colonel\, and her Austrian psychiatrist. Lanier was named one of the “Funniest Lesbians in America” by CURVE Magazine and None of the Above is why. \n  \nSea/Sick by Lawrence Siulagi \nSea/Sick represents the story of native cultures uprooted from their ancestral home from the paradise lust of dominant cultures. In this one-act play\, a female teen and her mother are driven from their Hawaiian home as a result of the island’s rising cost of living. Much like the rising waters due to global warming\, island natives are slowly driven out of their own place by high rents and low wages. It is a story of becoming an outcast; of being a brown female cast into a predominantly white\, conservative city. \n  \nNot My Revolution by Elizabeth Huffman \nA formerly wealthy Syrian art dealer gets caught up by a series of circumstances that spin out of control that ultimately lead her to take refuge in a filthy rat infested squat in Istanbul. During the night she has an unusual encounter with another woman whose life has also been destroyed by revolution\, Marie Antoinette\, herself imprisoned in a rat infested cell a few hours away from her execution. What does this dreamlike encounter mean for the Syrian woman and how will it affect what she does next? \n  \nThe Importance of Being Frank by Rusty Tennant \nIt is perhaps one of the greatest acts of deception in all of recorded history. Fuse Theatre Ensemble Artistic Director\, Rusty Tennant unravels a lifetime of studying Shakespeare into a battle between our collective history and the lies we agree to in order to create or erase said history. Weaving stories from his past with what we know (and don’t know) about the greatest playwright of all time\, Tennant takes you on a fast-paced journey that will leave you questioning what you thought you knew about the Bard and\, quite possibly\, yourself. \n  \nNone of the Above and Sea/Sick will be performed on Thursday and Saturday evenings; Not My Revolution and The Importance of Being Frank will be performed on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. Talk-back discussions will follow the performances on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.

SUMMARY:Indian Music Now
DESCRIPTION:Indian music and dance intersect with the West in this stunning performance of works by composers Reena Esmail\, Asha Srinivasan\, Shirish Korde\, and Nina Shekhar.  Featuring original choreography and contemporary Bharatanatyam dance by Portland’s creative laureate\, Subashini Ganesan. \nReena Esmail\, Shirish Korde\, Nina Shekhar and Asha Srinivasan explore technical and conceptual possibilities as they travel the intersection between the West and India. This vast terrain is accompanied by the movement of Portland’s Creative Laureate\, Subashini Ganesan\, performing both a newly choreographed work\, and contemporary Bharatanatyam dance. The composers all currently live in the U.S. and work to communicate openly about their lives and their music existing at this intersection between Indian and American cultures. This concert is not simply about Indian music—it is about tradition\, modernity\, intersectionality\, and identity\, all within the context of today.\nThe resulting work shifts between incredibly poignant to undeniably powerful. Indian Music Now is a compelling investigation of contemporary Indian music\, and a treat not often found in the Pacific Northwest. \nFeatured works: \nAlone\, Dancing (2003) \nBapu (2008) \nFalling (2005) \nby Asha Srinivasan\nAsha Srinivasan is an Indian-American composer and Associate Professor of Music at Lawrence University\, Appleton\, WI. Her mother\, Lalitha is a professional singer\, and Asha has been involved with music since her early childhood in India\, starting vocal lessons in Carnatic music (the classical music of Southern India) at age six. Introduced to Western classical music through the public school system in the US\, she had the opportunity to take her first Music Theory class in high school which sparked her passion for creating music. She draws from her Western musical training and her Indian heritage to create her compositional language. \nHonk If You Love Me (for clarinet\, electronics\, and dancer) (2018) \nby Nina Shekhar commissioned by Third Angle New Music\nNina Shekhar is currently a fifth-year undergraduate at the University of Michigan pursuing dual degrees in music composition and chemical engineering. Her music explores the intersection of identity\, vulnerability\, love\, and laughter. She has also previously collaborated with the JACK Quartet\, and her piece Quirkhead\, about O.C.D. and mental illness\, is scheduled to be featured in an upcoming PBS documentary chronicling the inaugural Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music. Aside from composing\, Shekhar performs as a flutist\, pianist\, and alto saxophonist. \nJhula Jhule (2013) \n“From the Mahabharata” Suite (2015) \nby Reena Esmail\nIndian-American composer Reena Esmail works between the worlds of Indian and Western classical music\, bringing communities together through the creation of equitable musical spaces. In addition to her work as a composer\, Esmail is the Co-Artistic Director of Shastra\, a non-profit organization that promotes cross-cultural music that connects the great musical traditions of India and the West. She is also the Composer-in-Residence with Street Symphony\, where she works with communities experiencing homelessness and incarceration in Los Angeles. She currently resides in Los Angeles\, California. \nAnusvara (2007) \nby Shirish Korde\nShirish Korde is celebrated for “integrating and synthesizing music of diverse cultures into breathtaking works of complex expressive layers.” His works have been performed by orchestras such as the Chicago and New Zealand symphonies\, Boston Philharmonic\, the National Polish Radio Orchestra; and ensembles such as The Boston Musica Viva\, Da Capo Chamber Players\, and The Ensemble Modern among others. He has received many grants and awards from institutions including the National Endowment for the Arts\, The Fromm Foundation\, and The Siemens Foundation. His works can be heard on the Chandos\, Neuma\, Centaur\, and Mode imprints. \nPortland’s Creative Laureate Subashini Ganesan is the Artistic Director of Natya Leela Academy where she choreographs contemporary works to express the universal emotional depths present in her form\, Bharathanatyam (South Indian Classical Dance). Her works have been showcased at local and regional festivals including Ten Tiny Dances\, Conduit’s Dance +\, NW Folk Life Festival\, and the Salem Library’s “World of Music.” She is a recipient of several grants from the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC) and is also an Operations Committee member of RACC’s Right Brain Initiative. As the Director of Studio 2@Zoomtopia\, in SE Portland\, she founded N.E.W. (New Expressive Works)\, an Artist in Residency Program.

SUMMARY:Elephant & Piggie's We are in a Play!
DESCRIPTION:Northwest Children’s Theater & School make their way to Hillsboro in Elephant & Piggie’s We are in A Play! \nMeet “bestus friends” Gerald the Elephant and Piggie the Pig. Together\, they tackle friendship’s big questions: What happens when two friends want to play with ONE toy? What DO you wear to a fancy party? And will ANYONE say “Banana?” NWCT’s 26th Season kicks off with the return of these beloved children’s book characters\, based on the popular book series by Mo Willems. \nPerfect for first-time theater-goers\, this upbeat musical explores the ups and downs of friendship through the eyes of Gerald and Piggie (portrayed by John Ellingson and Joellen Sweeney\, both returning from the original production). On a day when anything is possible\, Dog (Elo Paulorinne) drops by with an invitation to a party from The Squirrelles (Audrey Campbell\, Celia Castillo-Torres\, and Libby Rouffy). But what does one wear to a party? Is it a fancy party? A pool party? A costume party? Gerald knows – Gerald knows parties. \nDaytime school performances will be held Wednesday\, January 9th through Friday\, January 11th at 10 AM and Noon. For schools interested in booking any of these times should contact Northwest Children’s Theater’s School Matinee Manager\, Cindi Kinder\, at cindikinder@nwcts.org or by calling 503-222-2190 *115

SUMMARY:Brave Space: Alternative Religion\, Sikh
DESCRIPTION:Please make sure you RSVP for this event by responding to victoria@bagnbagagge.org \nSukhjinder Singh\, practicing Sikh and have lived in the US for almost 20 years.  He has spoken at High Schools and Colleges in the Portland area introducing the students to Sikh Religion. He has also gave a presentation to the representatives of various State Agencies as part of Governor Kate Brown’s diversity training initiative\, a couple of years ago. By profession\, He is an Engineering Manager in the Semiconductor field. \nSikhism is a monolithic religion founded in Punjab in the 15th century.  \n  \n\nSikhs have sometimes been targeted for how they look\, particularly after the events of Sept 11\, 2001. They are easily identified by the turbans\, and beards that they wear. The first person gunned down by a fanatic after 9/11 was a Sikh gas station owner in Phoenix\, AZ. His name was Balbir Singh Sodhi. Years later the Balbir Singh’s brother reached out to his brother’s killer in prison and told him that his family had forgiven him! \n2012\, there was a shooting in a Sikh temple in Wisconsin by a white supremacist\, in which 6 Sikhs were killed. The son of one of the persons killed in the temple reached out to another white supremacist to understand what drove their hatefulness and they together founded an organization to understand the causes of violence. \nDespite these unfortunate incidents\, Sikhs think of themselves as an integral part of the American social fabric and stand against injustice done to any community.
