This coming-of-age story highlights themes of resilience\, family bonds\, and social justice while depicting the harsh realities faced by immigrant families in 1930s America. Through Esperanza’s transformation from a sheltered ranch owner’s daughter to a determined young woman fighting for workers’ rights\, this play crafts an inspiring tale of finding strength in community during times of hardship.\n\n\nThere are TWO performances to choose from: March 28 and 29\, both opening at 6 with the reading beginning at 7pm.\n\n\nTickets are a suggested donation of $10; children are free.\nThis play is appropriate for ages 9 and up.

DESCRIPTION:Written and Performed by Andrea Parson. Directed by Katherine Murphy Lewis. \nThe journey of this show is extraordinary and unique. After Andrea’s loss of her sister to cancer in 2020 she decided\, bravely\, to turn this deeply personal tragedy into art. Over the next few years Andrea worked closely with From the Ground UP’s artistic director\, Katherine Murphy Lewis\, who also was going through her own journey of loss of her father to cancer\, who passed away in 2022\, just months before the workshop in performance hit the stage. These two continued to collaborate and have gone on to create what has become a profoundly moving new work that places grief center stage. \nIn November 2023 the world premier of You Can’t Be Serious was met with sold out shows and rave reviews at BodyVox Dance Center in Portland\, Oregon. After such a run it became clear this show had quite the life ahead of it. From the Oregon Fringe in Ashland last spring to Hollywood Fringe (LA) this past summer\, You Can’t Be Serious is currently in the process of realizing a national tour to be completed spring of 2025.\nThis fall You Can’t Be Serious will meet Portland Audiences again in partnership with Open Space at their studio theater this October before heading to New York City’s 42nd street as a part of the largest curated festival of solo work in the world\, United Solo.

SUMMARY:Grizelda's Day Off In Hell (Michigan)
DESCRIPTION:Grizelda is a farmer’s wife—overworked and under-appreciated by her family and in particular\, her husband. But just when she starts to stand up for herself\, she is betrayed and whisked away on a hellish “vacation” by a pair of malevolent travel brokers intent on stealing her soul. Can Grizelda find her confidence and\, more importantly\, find her way home? Can she break free of the cycle she’s been in her whole life? Can anyone tell her where Michigan is?!\n\nBased on “The Devil and the Farmer’s Wife\,” the HYPE troupe has taken this old tale and given it a fresh\, comedic face with a feminist twist. At the beginning of April\, they decided on source material as a collective and got to work writing\, staging\, and designing their own production. Facilitated by HYPE director Grayson Ashford\, working with an all-student production team\, to give full creative control to the HYPE students and allow them to apply the skills they’ve learned during their time in the program.
