SUMMARY:HomePlate (12-10-17)
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, December 10th\, 2017 (11:00am – 12:30pm)\nThe Vault Theater\, 350 E Main St\, Hillsboro\, OR\n  \n\nThere are 2\,202 homeless students in Washington county – of those\, 406 are unaccompanied youth. \nIn 2004\, community partners came together to discuss the increasing number of young people without homes in Washington County. Police officers were picking up youth with no addresses\, teachers were learning of more and more ‘couch surfers’ and social services were seeing younger people\, who were intimidated by a system designed for adults\, and the faith community wanted to help\, but didn’t know the best method. Portland has a well developed system of services\, but these are designed for a more street-acculturated\, urban\, not suburban youth – plus it was too far for many to travel. \nHome Plate is a free\, safe space where youth can build supportive relationships with adults\, access on-site resources\, and gain referrals to other services which are often difficult to navigate. \nMany youth seen at HomePlate don’t appear any different than your children\, family members\, or friends. They are striving to survive\, while also maintaining their social ties\, dignity\, and outward appearance as a ‘normal’ youth. Others are working\, going to school\, or raising families. And some are living with physical or mental challenges\, addiction\, legal histories\, and negative family influences. They are all unique. \nCome hear the lived experiences of these youth and the staff members of HomePlate who work with them. \n  \n\nALL ATTENDEES OF BRAVE SPACE MUST RSVP!\nSend your RSVP to outreach@bagnbaggage.org

SUMMARY:As You Like It or\, Love In A Forest
DESCRIPTION:Adventure. Mistaken Identity. Romance. Rivalry. Comedy. Love. Shakespeare’s classic As You Like It gets the full Bag&Baggage treatment in a new summer location (The Vault Courtyard and Theater)\, and in a new\, world premiere adaptation! B&B is digging deep into the literary history of the Bard’s brilliant romantic comedy\, combining Shakespeare’s story of Rosalind and Orlando with the almost completely unknown Restoration-era adaptation\, Love In A Forest by Charles Johnson. \nIn this creative re-imagining\, Shakespeare’s play has been “tidied up” and romantic entanglements are made even more entangled\, resulting in a fresh\, delightful new take on the charming Forest of Arden! A not-to-be-missed summer romantic comedy in true Bag&Baggage style. \n“One of the most beloved of all Shakespeare’s romantic comedies… a comedy that is poignant in portraying real human beings and underscores the power that love and peace have to overcome the forces of greed and deception…” \n– Yuko Kurahashi\, PlayShakespeare.com \n  \nJuly 12\,13\,14\,15\,19\,20\,21\,22\,26\,27\,28\,29 • 2018 \nThursdays – Saturdays @ 7:30 PM • Sundays @ 2 PM \nThe Vault Theater • 350 E Main St • Hillsboro\, OR \n

SUMMARY:Blithe Spirit
DESCRIPTION:From the delightfully wicked mind of Noël Coward\, the 20th century’s master of British wit and sophistication\, Blithe Spirit sparkles with out-of-this-world charm and spectral hijinks! And\, with all of the theatrical technology in our new building\, this production will be filled with delightful techno-trickery and stage magic! \nIn a plan to gather background information for his new book\, novelist Charles Condomine and his second wife\, Ruth\, invite local eccentric and medium\, Madame Arcati\, for dinner and a séance. A pleasant and informative evening turns into a series of madcap misadventures when the ghost of Charles’ first wife\, Elvira\, materializes with a plan of her own…to get Charles back\, even if it kills him! \nStarring a cast of B&B Resident and Associate Artists\, including Jessi Walters as Elvira\, Andrew Beck as Charles\, Cassie Greer as Ruth\, Peter Schuyler as Dr. Bradman\, and Kymberli Colbourne as the hilarious Madame Arcati! \n“Some of Coward’s most sparkling dialogue ever… This play is about something substantial – the way past relationships come back to haunt us – but it’s the gossamer-like nature of the piece\, its sheer levity of spirit\, that makes it such an enduring achievement.’” – Daily Telegraph\n\nThe Vault Theater\, 350 E Main Street\, Hillsboro\n May 10\, 11\, 12\, 13\, 17\, 18\, 19\, 20\, 24\, 25\, 26\, and 27\, 2018\n Thursday\, Friday\, Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 2:00pm

SUMMARY:Death and the Maiden
DESCRIPTION:Ariel Dorfman’s explosively provocative\, award-winning drama is set in a country that has only recently returned to democracy and still struggles with a fascist\, violent history. In many ways\, Death and the Maiden has more to say to America today than it ever has\, and is a chilling\, gripping tale of revenge and paranoia. \nGerardo Escobar has just been chosen to head the commission that will investigate the crimes of the old regime when his car breaks down and he is picked up by the humane doctor\, Roberto Miranda. But Gerardo’s wife\, Paulina Salas\, thinks she recognizes in Miranda’s voice the man who once tormented and tortured her as she lay blindfolded in a military detention center years before. Is this the same man? \nDeath and the Maiden marks the solo directorial debut of Cassie Greer\, longtime B&B Resident Actor and newly appointed Associate Artistic Director! \n“How does any society escape from the shadow of history? Is private revenge ever justified? And is there any judicial framework that can cope with endemic evil? These and other issues are explored with great skill in Dorfman’s still powerfully relevant masterpiece.” -The Guardian \nThe Vault Theater\, 350 E Main Street\, Hillsboro\nMarch 8\, 9\, 10\, 11\, 15\, 16\, 17\, 18\, 22\, 23\, 24\, and 25\, 2018\nThursday\, Friday\, Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 2:00pm

SUMMARY:Spinning Into Butter
DESCRIPTION:Political Correctness: 1. Of\, relating to\, or supporting broad social\, political\, and educational change\, especially to redress historical injustices in matters such as race\, class\, gender\, and sexual orientation;\, and\, 2. Being or perceived as being overly concerned with such change\, often to the exclusion of other matters.\n\nWhich is it? \nSpinning Into Butter explores the dangers of both racism and political correctness in America; a story seemingly ripped from today’s headlines and uniquely relevant to our political culture. \nWhen one of the few African American students at liberal Belmont College begins receiving hate mail\, the campus erupts\, first with shock\, then with mutual recrimination as faculty and students alike try to prove their own tolerance by condemning one another. At the center of this maelstrom is Sarah Daniels\, the Dean of Students. As the administration sponsors public “race forums” and the students start activist groups\, Sarah is forced to explore her own feelings of racism. Her self-examination leads to some surprising discoveries and painful insights\, the consequences of which even she can’t predict. \n“A brave\, honest\, intelligent\, and important play…Spinning Into Butter is a play that demands to be experienced…to avoid it is not only to cheat oneself as a theatre goer\, it is also to shirk a responsibility to think about serious matters…” – New York Magazine \n  \nThe Vault Theater\, 350 E Main Street\, Hillsboro\n September 7\, 8\, 9\, 10\, 14\, 15\, 16\, 17\, 21\, 22\, 23\, 24\, 2017\nThursday/Friday/Saturday at 7:30pm\, Sunday at 2:00pm

SUMMARY:Romeo & Juliet/Layla & Majnun
DESCRIPTION:Shakespeare’s tale of star-crossed lovers has been described as “timeless”…perhaps more so than most people think! \nThere is ample evidence to suggest that one of the main literary sources for the Bard’s story of feuding families comes from a 12th Century Persian tale called Layla & Majnun. In Nizami’s epic poem\, two “star-crossed lovers” rebel against the edicts of their parents\, embrace their forbidden love\, and pay the ultimate price. \n“Her parents’ home had become her prison. Guarding the secret of her love\, which must not be revealed\, she waited\, listening to the wind\, as it lovingly caressed her tent\, hoping it might bring a message from her beloved…”  – Layla & Majnun \nSound familiar? \nIn this world premiere adaptation\, B&B fuses the romantic\, haunting poetry of Nizami’s Layla & Majnun into Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet\, re-imagining the Bard’s tragic lovers in 12th Century Persia during the time of Emperor Constantine. \nA timely and powerful exploration of clashing cultures\, unrepentant love\, and unreasoning hate – and the deep ties that bind us all – performed outdoors at the Tom Hughes Civic Center Plaza in downtown Hillsboro. \nJuly 20\, 21\, 22\, 27\, 28\, 29\, and August 3\, 4\, and 5\, 2017\nThe Civic Center Plaza\, 150 E Main Street\, Hillsboro\nThursday\, Friday\, and Saturday at 7:30pm \n\nThanks also to our friends at Abu Rasheed Express Mediterranean food\, located at the corner of 3rd and Main in downtown Hillsboro\, for their generous sponsorship! DESCRIPTION:BY BETH GRAHAM\, DANIELA VLASKALIC AND CHARLIE TOMLINSON \n  \nBessie\, Alice and Margaret have two things in common: they were all married to George Joseph Smith and they are dead. Surfacing from the bathtubs they were drowned in\, the three breathless brides gather evidence against their womanizing\, murderous husband by reliving the shocking events leading up to their deaths. \nReflecting on the misconceptions of love\, married life and the not-so-happily ever after\, The Drowning Girls is both a breathtaking fantasia and a social critique\, full of rich images\, a myriad of characters\, and lyrical language. SUMMARY:CORIOLANUS
DESCRIPTION:by Thomas Sheridan\, adapted from William Shakespeare \nWilliam Shakespeare’s searing tragedy of political manipulation and familial betrayal is a shockingly contemporary tale of intrigue\, spin-doctors\, and divided politics. Coriolanus\, a powerful and arrogant Roman general\, holds nothing but contempt for the people of Rome. After the Tribunes banish him\, Coriolanus raises an army to take back his position and exact his revenge; but his mother and the citizens have other plans. \nBag&Baggage continues our exploration of lost classics by staging the nearly lost 1749 adaptation of the Shakespeare play by Thomas Sheridan; Coriolanus\, or the Roman Matron is largely credited with being the adaptation that saved Shakespeare’s work from an ignominious slide into history. \nA tight\, fast-paced\, and character driven work\, Sheridan’s Coriolanus retains all of Shakespeare’s passion and fire but trims the narrative and highlights the relationship between the titular character and Volumnia\, Coriolanus’ powerful and not-to-be-trifled with mother. Our production of the Sheridan adaptation is the first in recorded American history. \n  \nTHE BOX OFFICE FOR THIS EVENT IS LOCATED AT 150 E MAIN STREET\, AT THE CIVIC CENTER PLAZA\, NEXT DOOR TO THE STARBUCKS. SUMMARY:JANE AUSTEN'S EMMA
DESCRIPTION:JANE AUSTEN’S EMMA\nby Jane Austen\, Adapted by Michael Fry\nAn Oregon Premiere\nIn celebration of the bicentenary of the novel’s publication \nNOTE: Thursday\, May 5th’s “Preview Performance” is PAY WHAT YOU WILL! Show up to the Venetian Theatre on Thursday\, May 5th (before 7:15pm) and make a donation\, in any amount\, to see the show that night! \nTICKETS \n“An evening of rare pleasure\, indulging Austen fans with a worthy tribute\, and giving all a charmingly playful experience.“ – Theatreview New Zealand \nEmma is one of the best-known and most-beloved of all English novels\, and Jane Austen’s story has delighted generations of readers. This new adaptation brings to life all of the wonderfully eccentric characters from Austen’s little England as played by just five actors. “Private Theatricals” were a popular pastime in the Austen family home\, and adaptor Michael Fry has inventively placed his Emma within just such a setting. \nSharp-tongued\, beautifully observed and with a charming lightness of touch\, this is a “play within a play” which delightfully and ingeniously retains the words and wit of the classic novel. SUMMARY:MOBY DICK\, REHEARSED
DESCRIPTION:MOBY DICK\, REHEARSED\nBy Herman Melville\, adapted by Orson Welles\nDirected by Scott Palmer \nTICKETS \n“An adventure in theatre going…There is nothing else anywhere near like Moby Dick\, Rehearsed in the theatre.” – The New York Daily News \nA Shakespearean company meets to begin rehearsals for a production of King Lear. The director enters and hands out scripts for a new play called Moby Dick. As the actors take up their new roles\, the theatre is transformed from a simple rehearsal room into the yardarms\, sails\, masts and deck of the ship that is hunting the great white whale. Based on Orson Welles’ 1955 rehearsal experiment at the Duke of York‘s Theatre in London\, Moby Dick\, Rehearsed is a remarkable celebration of one of the greatest novels ever written and a triumph of theatrical imagination. \n  \nMarch 3\, 4\, 5\, 6\, 10\, 11\, 12\, 13\, 17\, 18\, 19\, & 20 (2016)\nThur/Fri/Sat at 7:30pm\nSunday at 2:00pm\nThe Venetian Theatre\n253 E Main Street\nHillsboro\, OR 97123 \n\n\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n\n\n \nSee the latest updates about this production!\n“A TRIUMPH!” – Moby Dick\, Rehearsed Review“EPIC!” – Willamette Week Review of Moby Dick“SPOT ON!” – Moby Dick\, Rehearsed Review“EXQUISITE!”- Moby Dick\, Rehearsed ReviewJumping Into Deep Water- Scott’s Moby Dick BlogYou Can Call Her CaptainB&B Hunts The White Whale!\n\nMOBY DICK\, REHEARSED STUDY GUIDE (FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS):\nMoby Dick Study Guide \nCAST:\nKymberli Colbourne (Leading Lady/Father Mapple/Lear) – Kymberli received her BA in Theatre Performance from Scripps College and also spent her junior year in conservatory training in London through the Marymount Tarrytown/RADA Drama Program. SUMMARY:RICHARD III
DESCRIPTION:RICHARD III\, by William Shakespeare\nAdapted and Directed by Scott Palmer\nA NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE\nOutdoors at the Tom Hughes Civic Center Plaza \nTICKETS \n\n\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n\n\n  \n“Shakespeare’s Richard III receives\, from Scott Palmer\, a pointing up of the comic possibilities without losing the horror of amoral destruction as Richard steadily makes his path to the English throne.” -Edinburgh review \nKnown as the Bard’s wittiest and most cruel historical character\, King Richard sees the world in a very specific way: as he wishes it to be. Our Richard III will place a perfectly formed King Richard in the midst of a cast of historical characters whose own failings and flaws make their bodies as twisted as Richard’s spine… a performance that asks our audience to ponder this question – Which world would you rather live in: the real one or Richard’s? \nJuly 22\, 23\, 24\, 25\, 29\, 30\, 31 and August 1\, 2015\n7:30pm\nThe Tom Hughes Civic Center Plaza\n150 E Main Street\, Hillsboro \nNote: This is an outdoor performance and no seating is provided.
