SUMMARY:Troy\, USA
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Troy\, USA\, 1972\, where tensions are high\, draft cards are burning\, and protests are rampant. A Chorus of historic activists and organizers guides us through this world premiere adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida\, examining war\, race\, class\, oppression\, betrayal\, and just how far we will go for love. Featuring striking imagery\, soulful music\, and a powerful multi-racial ensemble cast\, Troy\, USA marks the first major collaboration between playwrights Don Wilson Glenn and Dmae Lo Roberts\, and the third commission of Bag&Baggage Productions’ Problem Play Project\, supported by the Meyer Memorial Trust\, and directed by B&B Resident Artist Lawrence Siulagi. Additional sponsorship by Karl Citek and Patricia Logan.

SUMMARY:Climate Change Theatre Action 2021
DESCRIPTION:“We need to have a whole cultural shift\, where it becomes our culture to take care of the Earth\, and in order to make this shift\, we need storytelling about how the Earth takes care of us and how we can take care of her.” \n― Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson \nJoin Bag&Baggage for Climate Change Theatre Action 2021\, where we’ll tell stories\, learn\, and share about creating a culture of caring for the Earth. Part of our ongoing Unpacking the Baggage series\, CCTA 2021 features the readings of plays by Javaad Alipoor\, Keith Barker\, Nicolas Billon\, Paula Cizmar\, Nathan Ellis\, and Peterson Toscano; a panel discussion hosted by local climate organization 350PDX – Washington County Team; the display of a community-created Pandemic Quilt on the theme of Earth and climate\, facilitated by the Westside Quilters Guild; and an opportunity to create your own Pandemic Quilt squares with the Lewis & Clark College Art for Social Change Committee. Featured artists: Phillip J. Berns\, Cassie Greer\, Arianne Jacques\, Rae Davis\, Alec Lugo\, Peter Schuyler\, and Lawrence Siulagi. \nClimate Change Theatre Action is free to attend\, but advance reservations are required; we encourage you to make a donation to 350PDX. \nFounded in 2015\, Climate Change Theatre Action is a worldwide series of readings and performances of short climate change plays presented biennially to coincide with the United Nations COP meetings.
SUMMARY:Unpacking the Baggage: ¡HUELGA!
DESCRIPTION:Unpacking the Baggage is back – this time in collaboration with our friends at Teatro Milagro\, presenting ¡HUELGA! by Maya Malan-Gonzalez\, directed by B&B Resident Artist Mandana Khoshnevisan\, with sound design by B&B Resident Artist Lawrence Siulagi. ¡HUELGA! is a full-staged virtual production of a play exploring the incredible life of Dolores Huerta\, co-founder of United Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez. Travel with Dolores from the beginning of the farmworker’s movement in 1962 up to the present day\, as she continues to make history at the age of 90! Dolores’ innumerable successes often went uncelebrated in the past\, but in 2012\, when she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama\, he acknowledged the fact that Dolores coined the famous phrase “Si\, se puede\, yes\, we can!” \nThe ensemble cast of ¡HUELGA! – which includes Aurora Hernandez as Dolores\, Ajai Terrazas Tripathi as Bobby Kennedy and Fred Ross\, Pedro Adan Dominguez as Cesar Chavez and Tricia Castañeda Guevara as The Eagle and Gloria Steinem – also plays dozens of other characters in this fast-paced\, sometimes-irreverent retelling of the history of UFW and its co-founders Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez. Susana Jacobo joins the cast as La Musica\, to provide traditional folk songs for the marches and movements. \nFollowing the performance\, join us for a talk-back discussion with members of the cast and crew\, including B&B Resident Artists Mandana Khoshnevisan and Lawrence Siulagi!

SUMMARY:Sequestered Soliloquies VII: Shot in the Arm
DESCRIPTION:Watch on Facebook • Watch on YouTube\nOne year ago this month\, we brought you our first two Sequestered Soliloquies experiments in collaboration with LineStorm Playwrights. Twelve months later\, we’re still here\, and have collaborated with over 100 different artists on this project along the way – if that’s not inspiring\, we’re not sure what is! But just in case you’re feeling the “COVID Spring Year 2” blues\, we’ve got you covered: on Sunday\, April 25th\, we’re bringing you the seventh (and perhaps final?) round of Sequestered Soliloquies: Shot in the Arm. Ten teams (playwright\, actor\, director) will create\, rehearse\, and perform brand-new monologues\, which will be streamed directly to your screens via B&B’s Facebook and YouTube pages starting at 7:00pm on Sunday\, April 25th. We’re returning to the roots of this project\, with each monologue featuring a line from a show previously seen on the B&B stage – listen closely and see if you can figure out which ones they are! If you can’t catch us live on the 25th\, don’t worry: a full video of all the soliloquies will be available on our website for anytime viewing\, along with the videos of our other six rounds of Sequestered Soliloquies. Thanks for continuing to celebrate virtual\, instant theatre with us!
