SUMMARY:SOLO Fest 2019
DESCRIPTION:SOLO FEST showcases stories\, performers\, and artists who are not typically seen on stages in Washington County — people and experiences that have either been ignored\, silenced\, or dismissed. With SOLO FEST\, we celebrate the diversity of the people who live here in our community\, and we honor their stories through the vehicle of solo performance. This year’s festival features the following shows: \n  \nNone of the Above by Jennifer Lanier \nNone of the Above is a solo comedy about the intersections of race\, gender\, sexuality\, and coming out with Diana Ross. There is no fourth wall and the audience participates while Lanier becomes several characters — including her six-year-old self\, her Daddy the Colonel\, and her Austrian psychiatrist. Lanier was named one of the “Funniest Lesbians in America” by CURVE Magazine and None of the Above is why. \n  \nSea/Sick by Lawrence Siulagi \nSea/Sick represents the story of native cultures uprooted from their ancestral home from the paradise lust of dominant cultures. In this one-act play\, a female teen and her mother are driven from their Hawaiian home as a result of the island’s rising cost of living. Much like the rising waters due to global warming\, island natives are slowly driven out of their own place by high rents and low wages. It is a story of becoming an outcast; of being a brown female cast into a predominantly white\, conservative city. \n  \nNot My Revolution by Elizabeth Huffman \nA formerly wealthy Syrian art dealer gets caught up by a series of circumstances that spin out of control that ultimately lead her to take refuge in a filthy rat infested squat in Istanbul. During the night she has an unusual encounter with another woman whose life has also been destroyed by revolution\, Marie Antoinette\, herself imprisoned in a rat infested cell a few hours away from her execution. What does this dreamlike encounter mean for the Syrian woman and how will it affect what she does next? \n  \nThe Importance of Being Frank by Rusty Tennant \nIt is perhaps one of the greatest acts of deception in all of recorded history. Fuse Theatre Ensemble Artistic Director\, Rusty Tennant unravels a lifetime of studying Shakespeare into a battle between our collective history and the lies we agree to in order to create or erase said history. Weaving stories from his past with what we know (and don’t know) about the greatest playwright of all time\, Tennant takes you on a fast-paced journey that will leave you questioning what you thought you knew about the Bard and\, quite possibly\, yourself. \n  \nNone of the Above and Sea/Sick will be performed on Thursday and Saturday evenings; Not My Revolution and The Importance of Being Frank will be performed on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. Talk-back discussions will follow the performances on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.

SUMMARY:Brave Space: Alternative Religion\, Sikh
DESCRIPTION:Please make sure you RSVP for this event by responding to victoria@bagnbagagge.org \nSukhjinder Singh\, practicing Sikh and have lived in the US for almost 20 years.  He has spoken at High Schools and Colleges in the Portland area introducing the students to Sikh Religion. He has also gave a presentation to the representatives of various State Agencies as part of Governor Kate Brown’s diversity training initiative\, a couple of years ago. By profession\, He is an Engineering Manager in the Semiconductor field. \nSikhism is a monolithic religion founded in Punjab in the 15th century.  \n  \n\nSikhs have sometimes been targeted for how they look\, particularly after the events of Sept 11\, 2001. They are easily identified by the turbans\, and beards that they wear. The first person gunned down by a fanatic after 9/11 was a Sikh gas station owner in Phoenix\, AZ. His name was Balbir Singh Sodhi. Years later the Balbir Singh’s brother reached out to his brother’s killer in prison and told him that his family had forgiven him! \n2012\, there was a shooting in a Sikh temple in Wisconsin by a white supremacist\, in which 6 Sikhs were killed. The son of one of the persons killed in the temple reached out to another white supremacist to understand what drove their hatefulness and they together founded an organization to understand the causes of violence. \nDespite these unfortunate incidents\, Sikhs think of themselves as an integral part of the American social fabric and stand against injustice done to any community.

SUMMARY:Write A Play! Playwright's Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Vault for an evening of original work as the members of our Write A Play! Workshop\, facilitated by Dan Kitrosser\, present portions of the plays they have written over the past several weeks! Scenes from each play will be read by B&B Resident Acting Company members\, Associate Artists\, and Emerging Artists. This event is FREE. The playwrights and plays are as follows: \n  \nANYPL(ACE) by Autumn Buck \nAce is asexual. Archie is non-binary. Both are seniors in high school navigating their final year together before college. Through a lakeside cabin\, lucid dreams\, serious heart surgery\, and blue Slurpees\, Ace and Archie learn what it means to grow up and grow apart\, as well as what it takes to stay together in a world still trying to understand them. \n  \nOf Pinewood and Mountain Face by Lindsay Partain \nBringing to life the magic and the rich folklore of the Pacific Northwest\, Of Pinewood and Mountain Face takes place at the Red Cedar Inn where long-time friends Sabrina and Miles work. Between crass jokes and cleaning glasses\, the pair spin stories about the people who stay with them to pass the time — until their world splits apart. Literally. When a 9.6 level earthquake hits\, it leaves Sabrina\, Miles\, and their guests to fend for themselves in the National Forest of Washington. And what better way to pass the time when the world is tearing itself apart? Stories\, of course. \n  \n(T)RAIN by Sharon Gavin \n(T)RAIN highlights the lives of several passengers aboard a MAX Blue Line train to Hillsboro\, focusing on the people we may notice but never really see. Characters often break the fourth wall…some never even acknowledge its existence. To them\, all the world’s a stage. \n  \nBlinded Hope by Enrique Andrade \n

SUMMARY:Deathtrap
DESCRIPTION:The longest-running thriller on Broadway comes to Main Street in downtown Hillsboro. A fiendishly clever plot\, with nerve-jangling twists and turns\, Deathtrap is a true classic of American theatre. \nSidney Bruhl\, a once-successful writer of stage thrillers\, is in the grip of chronic writer’s block\, when young playwright Clifford Anderson sends Bruhl his brilliant new whodunit\, Deathtrap. Desperate to set Broadway alight once more\, should Bruhl kill the newcomer and pass the play off as his own? \nNo one is who they appear to be\, and\, with every twist and turn\, Deathtrap will keep you guessing until the bitter\, bloody end! A taut\, terrifying\, and thrilling way to kick off the Halloween season! \n“Thrillers are a tough genre to make work in live theatre\, but when they’re as well written as Ira Levin’s 1978 masterpiece\, they can be as hair-raising and suspenseful as the very best thriller films… an exciting night of highly enjoyable entertainment\, filled with twists and turns!” \n– Jacob Davis\, The Chicago Critic

SUMMARY:Brave Space: Domestic Violence in Same-Sex Partnerships
DESCRIPTION:Please make sure you RSVP for this event by responding to victoria@bagnbagagge.org \n  \nThere are several aspects of intimate partner violence which can be unique to the LGBTQ community. “Outing” or threatening to reveal one partner’s sexual orientation/gender identity may be used as a tool of abuse in violent relationships and may also be a barrier which reduces the likelihood of help-seeking for the abuse.
Prior experiences of physical or psychological trauma\, such as bullying and hate crime\, may make LGBTQ victims of domestic violence less likely to see help. -Domestic Violence and the LGBTQ community. \n  \nOur Brave Speakers from the community include: \n  \nColton Markham is currently the Director of the Community Advocacy program at the Domestic Violence Resource Center which serves survivors in Washington County. SUMMARY:Magazine Lecture: Artistic License and Performing Rights
DESCRIPTION:Many theatre patrons are unaware of the notion of “performing rights” and how those contracts can impact the overall staging and approach to a production. Ira Levin\, the author of Deathtrap\, and his estate have a wide range of requirements and restrictions on how theatre companies can produce his classic work while\, at the same time\, theatres still want to put their own unique interpretation onto the play. In this discussion\, Artistic Director Scott Palmer discusses the importance of performing rights agreements in light of the very real need to have a unique opinion about the work B&B produces.

SUMMARY:Hillsboro Reads: Far Away
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Hillsboro Reads program\, Bag&Baggage presents a rehearsed reading of Caryl Churchill’s Far Away\, a futuristic nightmare where the promise of violence broods and nothing is to be trusted. We follow the life and experience of Joan\, from a young girl witnessing horrific actions\, to a young woman seeking refuge in a world where literally everyone and everything is at war. \nWritten by the celebrated author of Top Girls and Cloud Nine\, this innovative work consists of three brief scenes. In the first\, a young girl spending her first night in her new guardian’s house witnesses a bloody slaughter. Next\, the girl\, now grown\, is spending her first day working in a hat factory. There\, she and a young man concoct funny and elaborate hats that are to be worn for a horrific purpose. In the final scene\, the boy and girl\, now wed\, are seeking refuge from a global conflict so extreme that even the animals are on one side or another. \nCaryl Churchill wrote Far Away in 2000\, investigating fear and its far-reaching effects and consequences. As the Hillsboro community grapples with the themes of Omar El Akkad’s American War\, Bag&Baggage invites you to explore some of the same questions through the lens of Far Away.
