SUMMARY:The Island In Winter or\, La Isla en Invierno
DESCRIPTION:Our inaugural Problem Play Project production is a remarkable new vision of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale in a bilingual world premiere adaptation! The Bard’s spellbinding tale of jealousy\, prophecy\, magic\, and redemption\, reworked by Hillsboro-native Carlos-Zenen Trujillo\, transports the action away from Sicilia and Bohemia to Miami and Havana. \nBringing Latin-American magical realism to play in one of Shakespeare’s most compelling (and magical) tales\, The Island In Winter is the first show in a three-year project that asks emerging playwrights of color to re-imagine Shakespeare’s Problem Plays with a diversity and equity lens. \nfunded through The Problem Play Project \nsupported by The Meyer Memorial Trust \n“The Problem Play Project gives fresh\, new voices the chance to examine the most compelling questions of our time – our community\, our common humanity\, and our need to connect with each other in deep and profound ways…” \n– Scott Palmer\, fundador y director artístico

SUMMARY:Third Person: A Staged Reading
DESCRIPTION:Third Person is a comedic play about a working-class American family whose patriarch\, Buck\, is hit by lighting\, forever changing the way he interacts with the world. Following the lightning strike\, Buck can’t help but narrate his life as it is going on\, giving us his internal monologue at every moment\, and ultimately divulging family secrets of mayhem and murder. Third Person is a poignant story about the crumbling of the working class family in America\, and how the powerful tool of storytelling can help rebuild and reunite us. Written by Dan Kitrosser\, directed by Matt Pavik\, and featuring a handful of Bag&Baggage favorites in this one-night-only staged reading! \nDan Kitrosser is a playwright and screenwriter who splits his time between Portland\, OR and New York City. Dan is a 2016 TimeWarner 150 Fellow\, a 2014 Sundance Screenwriting Fellow\, a 2014 Harold and Mimi Steinberg Playwriting Fellow\, a 2015 TerraNOVA Collective Groundbreaker\, a Maryland Filmmakers Fellow\, a recipient of the Fringe First Award for Playwriting at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, and the recipient of a Special Citation from Amnesty International’s Freedom of Expression Awards. Dan has taught playwriting and screenwriting all over the US and is also the founding Artistic Director of Writopia Lab’s Worldwide Plays Festival\, a festival of plays written by playwrights ages 6 – 19 from all over the world.

SUMMARY:SOLO Fest 2019
DESCRIPTION:SOLO FEST showcases stories\, performers\, and artists who are not typically seen on stages in Washington County — people and experiences that have either been ignored\, silenced\, or dismissed. With SOLO FEST\, we celebrate the diversity of the people who live here in our community\, and we honor their stories through the vehicle of solo performance. This year’s festival features the following shows: \n  \nNone of the Above by Jennifer Lanier \nNone of the Above is a solo comedy about the intersections of race\, gender\, sexuality\, and coming out with Diana Ross. There is no fourth wall and the audience participates while Lanier becomes several characters — including her six-year-old self\, her Daddy the Colonel\, and her Austrian psychiatrist. Lanier was named one of the “Funniest Lesbians in America” by CURVE Magazine and None of the Above is why. \n  \nSea/Sick by Lawrence Siulagi \nSea/Sick represents the story of native cultures uprooted from their ancestral home from the paradise lust of dominant cultures. In this one-act play\, a female teen and her mother are driven from their Hawaiian home as a result of the island’s rising cost of living. Much like the rising waters due to global warming\, island natives are slowly driven out of their own place by high rents and low wages. It is a story of becoming an outcast; of being a brown female cast into a predominantly white\, conservative city. \n  \nNot My Revolution by Elizabeth Huffman \nA formerly wealthy Syrian art dealer gets caught up by a series of circumstances that spin out of control that ultimately lead her to take refuge in a filthy rat infested squat in Istanbul. During the night she has an unusual encounter with another woman whose life has also been destroyed by revolution\, Marie Antoinette\, herself imprisoned in a rat infested cell a few hours away from her execution. What does this dreamlike encounter mean for the Syrian woman and how will it affect what she does next? \n  \nThe Importance of Being Frank by Rusty Tennant \nIt is perhaps one of the greatest acts of deception in all of recorded history. Fuse Theatre Ensemble Artistic Director\, Rusty Tennant unravels a lifetime of studying Shakespeare into a battle between our collective history and the lies we agree to in order to create or erase said history. Weaving stories from his past with what we know (and don’t know) about the greatest playwright of all time\, Tennant takes you on a fast-paced journey that will leave you questioning what you thought you knew about the Bard and\, quite possibly\, yourself. \n  \nNone of the Above and Sea/Sick will be performed on Thursday and Saturday evenings; Not My Revolution and The Importance of Being Frank will be performed on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. Talk-back discussions will follow the performances on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.
