EVOLUTION Update – January 27, 2017

SHINING A LIGHT IN THE NEW YEAR

Dear EVOLUTION donors,

I hope your year has gotten off to a good start! We’re already back in the thick of it, with events, venue changes, construction, and rehearsals keeping us on our toes. Here are a few updates on what’s been going on around here since the first of the year…

It’s Really Happening!

We’re so thrilled that we can see our new home beginning to take shape! Our contractors have spent the past few weeks drilling through concrete, removing an absurd amount of brick from the basement, laying the plumbing and electrical groundwork, moving a huge steel support beam, and knocking down walls in the front entryway. In the photos below, you can see the theater wall footings – those big trenches are the borders of our playing space, and will, in the next couple of weeks, be occupied by actual walls! We can’t wait!

The Ghostlight Project Launch

Last Thursday, we joined more than 750 theatres around the country – in all 50 states – in launching The Ghostlight Project: a national initiative lead by the theatre community to protect the values of inclusion, participation, and compassion for all people, regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability, age, gender identity, or sexual orientation. We pledge that Bag&Baggage will always be a space where people can come together without fear as their authentic selves; where diverse opinions will be heard, honored, and engaged; and where collective action and community engagement are cultivated. You can read the Hillsboro Tribune’s coverage of our event here. If you’d like to stay up-to-date about future Ghostlight Project initiatives and events, please let me know and I’ll add you to our Ghostlight-specific email list!

The Show Must Go On

You have probably heard our news that, due to the pending sale of The Venetian, we will be relocating our next show, the Pacific Northwest premiere of Polly Teale’s literary fantasia, Brontë, to the Brookwood Branch of the Hillsboro Public Library. While this arrangement poses some challenges, we’re also thrilled about the creative opportunities that open up to us by exploring a non-traditional performance space, and we hope you join us to see what is sure to be a Bag&Baggage experience like no other! Most importantly, we’re filled with gratitude: for the library and their incredible partnership, helping ensure that we are able to produce this show; and for the City of Hillsboro and all of you, who have helped ensure that after this season, we will gain the stability of being in our own venue. Thank you!

As we forge ahead in all of these things, I’ll be sure to keep you updated! Thank you for your ongoing support, and for being a part of the community that we’re continuing to build together. We are truly a stronger organization because of you!

Best,
Cassie
