After a season dotted with heavyweight plays – an all-female “Julius Caesar, “The Great Gatsby,” an adaptation of “King Lear” – Bag&Baggage ends with a cocktail:Noel Coward’s “Private Lives.”

The 1930 comedy of manners tells the story of a divorced couple who, while honeymooning with their new spouses, discover they are staying in adjacent rooms at the same hotel. The second-act love scene was almost censored in Britain as too risqué, but Coward persuaded the censors otherwise. He also wrote one of his most popular songs, “Some Day I’ll Find You”, for the play.

But “Private Lives” isn’t all froth. “There is something dangerous underneath these hilarious words,” says Scott Palmer, the company’s artistic director. “Coward himself said he felt the play was psychologically imbalanced.” Palmer plans to find what Coward described as “the dangerous rocks submerged beneath its surface.”

The cast includes resident acting company members Adam Syron as Elyot, Arianne Jacques as Sibyl, Gary Strong as Victor and Theresa Park as Louise. Chrissy Kelly-Pettit plays Amanda.

When: May 8 (preview); opens May 9 through 30.

Where: Venetian Theatre, 253 E. Main St., Hillsboro

Tickets: $20-$30; 503-345-9590; bagnbaggage.org

A companion piece, “Cabaret Coward” runs on two Wednesday evenings (May 14, 21) during the run, with songs, scenes and monologues by Coward.
