Education

At Bag&Baggage, we believe every student in our community can benefit from being involved in the performing arts.

Rigorous research has taught us that the value of theatre is priceless... Until now.

Theatre is a life changing experience. It can help our children improve reading and language skills, explore complex social and philosophical questions, develop a lifelong appreciation for the arts, and build connections within our community.

TEN4ONEIt can help keep our kids in school, improve academic performance, and create lasting friendships. Bag&Baggage is pleased to announce a simple, affordable way for you to give students in Washington County the experience of a lifetime.

TEN4ONE is a scholarship program that asks you to donate $10 so that 1 student from Washington County can attend a live performance of professional theatre by Bag&Baggage Productions along with a 1 hour “post show” discussion with the director, designers and actors. Your $10 tax-deductible donation will give 1 student from our community the chance to experience live theatre right here, in our community, where we all live, work and play.

What price would you place on the experience of a lifetime? How about $10?

WHAT?

TEN4ONE is a new, unique scholarship program, administered by Bag&Baggage Productions (Hillsboro’s only professional theatre company), that provides free tickets for students from Washington County schools to attend professional theatre performances at The Venetian Theatre.

All donations are tax-deductible and all funds raised will go directly to cover the costs of student tickets. Every student who receives a ticket will also attend a 1 hour “post show” discussion with the cast and crew of the production, giving our students a chance to explore the world of live theatre more fully.

Ten Dollars. One student. The experience of a lifetime.

WHY?

Snow White at Washington County FairThe impact of theatre and the performing arts on the lives of our students is signifi cant and life-changing.

According to the American Alliance for Theatre and Education
:

  • Students involved in drama and theatre outscored non-arts students on the 2005 SAT by an average of 65 points in the verbal component and 34 points in the math component.
  • Involvement in theatre activities improves reading comprehension, and both verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Drama helps to improve school attendance and reduce high school dropout rates.
Theatre experiences improve social skills and academic performance in children and youth with
    learning disabilities.
  • Students considered to be at high risk for dropping out of high school cite drama and other arts classes as their motivations for staying in school.
  • Reading, watching and performing Shakespeare texts helps to improve students’ understanding of
other complex texts, including science and math material.
  • Students who participate in the arts are 3 times more likely to win awards for school attendance than those who do not.

By offering students throughout Washington County the opportunity to engage in theatre and the performing arts in a consistent and meaningful way, we believe was help improve academic performance, reduce dropout rates and motivate our students to live a lifetime of appreciation for the arts.

HOW?

How does “TEN4ONE” work? It couldn’t be easier.

From now until the 15th of August, 2010, we will be working in partnership with a wide range of business, academic and social organizations to solicit donations for the program. Community members, corporate sponsors and social service organizations will simply send in tax deductible donations (in multiples of $10) by check, made out to Bag&Baggage Productions, (and include “TEN4ONE” in the note section of the check).

We will combine all of the donations we receive from now until August 15th, 2010 into a scholarship fund. If we receive $100 in donations, 10 students from Washington County will be eligible to receive a free ticket. If we recieve $100,000 in donations, 10,000 students will receive free tickets! Every $10 donation will go directly to fund a free ticket for 1 student.

In August of 2010, just before we open our 2010-2011 Season at The Venetian Theatre, Bag&Baggage will inform schools throughout Washington County of the funds that are available. Schools will be asked to fill out a simple, one page application form and we will distribute the free tickets we have available. If we have 1,000 free tickets we will divide those tickets between each of our four shows, meaning 250 students will have the chance to see each of our productions.

It is, truly, that simple.
