About Us

Mission Statement: The mission of Bag&Baggage Productions is to unpack the stories we carry with us — from anecdotal to epic; from original to classic — using these as the groundwork to create transformative theatrical experiences that explore our shared humanity.

Vision Statement: Bag&Baggage strives to weave creative expression into the fabric of the civic life of Hillsboro through conscious relationship-building; to use our art to intentionally challenge the tenets of white supremacy; and to heal the wounds in our community through the cultivation of empathy and listening. We use this vision as our guide as we actively work towards our collective liberation.

Guiding Values: Artistry: We believe that theatre - a venue to embody, examine, and unpack our stories - is crucial to our collective wellbeing. We seek to tell stories that create connection; that foster empathy by uplifting narratives that have historically been pushed aside; and that inspire our community by engaging hearts, minds, and imaginations. In our artistic work, we value people over profit, quality over quantity, collaboration over individualism, and a healthy dose of irreverence and originality.

Community: We believe that our work - onstage and off - aspires to be a reflection of the patrons and artists who walk through our doors or click “play” on a virtual show. We seek to create a welcoming space that truly values and serves every individual by championing diversity, breaking down barriers to access, inviting conversation, investing in relationships and partnerships. We look to equity and antiracism as guideposts. We value communication, responsiveness, coalition, and uplifting the work of local artists.

Transparency: We believe that clear and accurate communication of our goals, principles, and practices is crucial. We seek to confront challenges head-on, even if this means leaning into discomfort. We affirm the practice of holding space for dialogue and discourse, especially when disagreement arises. We value accountability, rigor, constructive criticism, and the communal learning that can come from sharing openly about our endeavors.

Sustainability: We believe that the thoughtful stewardship of resources - human, financial, and environmental - is integral to our work. We seek to create budgets that fairly compensate staff and artists; to build a working environment that values the needs of the individual; and to utilize and invest in partners whose values are in alignment with our own. We value continual learning and growth, grassroots movements (e.g. Community Centric Fundraising), and the practice of acknowledging and addressing our history in order to move into our future.
